Mean\/ Average<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This measure of central tendency summarizes the data, by considering a value which is an estimate of the total data set. It helps us to ascertain the spread in variables between the minimum and maximum values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> <strong>Sample Mean<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Population Mean<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sample Data:<\/strong> 12,18,25,69,45&nbsp;<br><strong>Sample Mean:<\/strong> [(12+18+25+69+45)\/5] = 33.80<br><strong>Population Data<\/strong>: 55,46,78,12,18,33,28,45,25,69,66<br><strong>Population Mean<\/strong>: [(55+46+78+12+18+33+28+45+25+69+66)\/11)] = 43.18 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"2-median\"><strong>2.<\/strong> <strong>Median<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Median is the middle item in a data set arranged in ascending\/descending order.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If there are n observations then the Median&nbsp; = (n+1)\/2 th observation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Computational Rule.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If n is odd, then (n+1)\/2 is an integer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If n is even, then use an average of n\/2 and (n\/2) +1th observation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3-mode\"><strong>3.<\/strong> <strong>Mode<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mode is the highest occurring observation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The greatest frequency can occur at two or more different values.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the data has only two modes, the data is bimodal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the data has more than two modes, the data is multimodal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4-percentiles-and-quartiles\"><strong>4.<\/strong> <strong>Percentiles and Quartiles<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The P<sup>th<\/sup> percentile in the ordered set is that value below which lies P% (P percent) of the observations in the set.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The position of the P<sup>th<\/sup> percentile is given by (n + 1) P\/100, where n is the number of observations in the set.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Quartiles are special names to percentiles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Q1 = 25th percentile<br>Q2 = 50th percentile = median<br>Q3 = 75th percentile<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"comparison-of-mean-median-and-mode\"><strong>Comparison of Mean, Median, and Mode<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Mean<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Median<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Mode<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Defined as the arithmetic average of all observations in the data set.<\/td><td>Defined as the middle value in the data set arranged in ascending or descending order.<\/td><td>Defined as the most frequently occurring value in the distribution; it has the largest frequency.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Requires measurement on all observations.<\/td><td>It does not require measurement on all observations.<\/td><td>It does not require measurement on all observations.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Uniquely and comprehensively defined.<\/td><td>Cannot be determined under all conditions.<\/td><td>Not uniquely defined for multi-modal situations.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Affected by extreme values.<\/td><td>Not affected by extreme values.<\/td><td>Not affected by extreme values.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Can be treated algebraically. Range<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The range of a data set is the difference between the largest and smallest data values.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is the simplest measure of variability.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is very sensitive to the smallest and largest data values.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Range = X <sub>max <\/sub>\u2013 X <sub>min<\/sub>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"2-interquartile-range-iqr\"><strong>2. Interquartile Range (IQR)<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The interquartile range of a data set is the difference between the third quartile and the first quartile.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is the range for the middle 50% of the data.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It overcomes the sensitivity to extreme data values.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3-variance\"><strong>3. Standard Deviation<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The standard deviation of a data set is the positive square root of the variance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is measured in the same units as the data, making it more easily comparable, than the variance, to the mean.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the data set is a sample, the standard deviation is denoted <em>s<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the data set is a population, the standard deviation is denoted <em>s<\/em> (sigma).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"5-coefficient-of-variation\"><strong>5. (opens in a new tab)\"> What is Data Science? <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"skewness\"><strong>Skewness<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Skewness characterizes the degree of asymmetry of a distribution around its mean.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The concept of skewness is mainly used to understand the distribution of the data and steps taken to normalize the data for further building of machine learning models.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In case of negatively skewed data, Mean&lt;Median&lt;Mode. This indicates, more data points are to the right of the curve where the data has very high values in large numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In case of positively skewed data, Mode&lt;Median&lt;Mean. This means that more data points are to the left of the curve where the data has very low values in large numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"measure-of-skewness\"><strong>Measure class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"kurtosis\"><strong>Kurtosis<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Kurtosis characterizes the symmetric distribution through the relative peaks or flatness of the curve.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main difference between Skewness and Kurtosis is:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Skewness measures the degree of the slope in the frequency distribution.<\/strong><br><strong>Kurtosis measures the degree of thickness in the tails of the distribution curve.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are 3 types of Kurtosis:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Platykurtic (relatively flat)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mesokurtic (normal)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leptokurtic (relatively peaked)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Measure of <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>is the fourth standardized moment or the fourth degree. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"association-between-the-two-variables\"><strong>Association between the two variables<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Scatter plot<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Scatter Plots<\/strong> are used to identify underlying relationships among pairs of data sets.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The plot consists of many scattered points, each point representing an observation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on the distribution in the dataset and the points in the scatter plot, we can infer the outliers in the dataset and the relationship between 2 variables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. <strong>Covariance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The covariance is a measure of the linear association between two variables.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Positive values indicate a positive relationship.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Negative values indicate a negative relationship<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If the data sets are samples, the covariance is denoted by:<\/p>\n\n\n<figure Coefficient<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Correlation measures the strength and direction of linear relationship between variables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The coefficient can take on values between -1 and +1.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Values near -1 indicate a strong negative linear relationship.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Values near +1 indicate a strong positive linear
