Curriculum that match World Standards – Sowmya, Consultant

Table of contents

Upskilling remains vital in any stage of a professional’s career. Whether one is a fresher, a mid or a senior management professional, or freelancers and independent consultants. Here is a testimony from Sowmya Vivek justifying the importance and value of upskilling even after 20 years of a successful career.

What is your professional background?

I started my career with studying engineering in Printing Technology from the College of Engineering, Guindy in 1990. I did an MBA from BITS Pilani in 2014 and I am a certified Six Sigma Black Belt from ASQ since the year 2016. Before migrating to analytics, I worked in content management & publishing – operations domain for about 20 years. Currently, I am an independent consultant for Deep Learning & NLP for last 5 years. Along with it, I am a visiting faculty at Great Lakes Institute of Management for various courses.

How did you develop an interest in this course?

While working with Elsevier, I was managing their content publishing platform, which incidentally had 70 million records and a mammoth amount of data to process. This gave me a push towards operational excellence and statistical modelling, so I took up a certification course in Six Sigma. After this, I felt a need for formal training in analytics, hence I joined BABI program at Great Learning. To start with this, I quit my previous job to focus completely on upskilling. My aim was to get into consulting and be domain-independent, so I started taking analytics project parallelly with the course.

How is GL better compared to others in the same field?

The main value add is the quality of faculty and the structured curriculum. I did a few mentoring sessions with other competitors before joining GL. In comparison, GL has a better course curriculum and the quality of faculty. GL puts a lot of effort to make the curriculum up to date and of the quality matching world-standards.

What will be your advice to the future aspirants?

The first thing that I would like to suggest to them is to make the best out of the course. All the courses are designed to make the fundamentals strong. Give your best to all the exercises and make use of every opportunity to develop a better understanding of concepts. Read and research more and write blogs to be thorough with the concepts.
