About Agentic AI

What is Agentic AI in simple terms?

Agentic AI refers to AI systems that can set goals, plan a sequence of steps, take actions, and self-correct, all with minimal human intervention. Unlike standard AI that responds to a single prompt, an agentic system behaves more like a digital co-worker: it receives a high-level objective and figures out how to accomplish it on its own.

For example, instead of asking an AI to "summarize this report," an agentic system would autonomously find the report, summarize it, cross-reference relevant data, and deliver the output, without you having to manage each step.

What is the difference between Generative AI and Agentic AI?

Generative AI creates content, such as text or code, based on specific prompts. Agentic AI moves from simple task execution to autonomous, goal-driven behavior. These systems can reason, plan, and interact with other systems to achieve specific outcomes with minimal oversight.

AI agents vs Agentic AI: what’s the difference?

An AI Agent is a single autonomous unit, one model with a specific role, a set of tools, and memory. Agentic AI is the broader system design that may involve one or many such agents working together toward a shared goal.

In other words, AI Agents are the building blocks, and Agentic AI is the architecture that connects them. A pipeline that uses different agents working together, that entire system is Agentic AI.

What is Agentic AI architecture?

Agentic AI architecture is the framework that enables AI systems to operate independently and complete tasks end-to-end. Instead of responding to a single prompt, it combines key components like

  • A planner (to break down goals),
  • Memory (to retain context),
  • Tools (to interact with external systems), and
  • An execution loop (to act, evaluate, and refine results).

Together, these components allow the system to plan, adapt, and achieve complex goals with minimal human input.

What is Agentic RAG, and is it covered in these programs?

Agentic RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) is an advanced architecture where an AI agent dynamically decides when and what to retrieve from external knowledge sources, rather than pulling everything upfront. This makes AI systems significantly more accurate and context-aware in real-world applications.

Yes, Agentic RAG is a core component of the JHU and IIT Bombay programs, and is listed as one of the primary skills covered across the Agentic AI curriculum.

How do AI agents actually work?

AI Agents use an AI model as a "brain" to understand a goal, create a plan, and autonomously operate external tools (like APIs or software) to complete tasks. They

  • Plan: Break the goal into actionable steps.
  • Act: Use a tool to execute a step.
  • Reflect: Check the result. If it fails, adjust the plan and try again.

Is Agentic AI hard to learn?

Not necessarily. The difficulty depends on your starting point.

  • Beginner: You can start with no-code tools and learn how agentic systems work conceptually.
  • Intermediate: With some technical background, you will learn Python, APIs, and how to build simple AI agents.
  • Advanced: You will work on multi-agent systems, orchestration frameworks, and real-world deployments.

Most structured programs guide you through these stages step by step, making the transition manageable if you stay consistent.
