Interactive sessions with a lot of focus on real-life problems – Supriyo Chatterjee, PGP AIML

Hi, my name is Supriyo Chatterjee. I’m a B.Tech in Computer Science from CUSAT Kochi and have 16+ years of professional IT experience. I’m an eCommerce expert with 14 years of domain expertise in the field. I have had a mixed bag of experiences in the past, in the corporate world as well as in startups. I’m always inclined towards technology to solve business problems, and so whichever role I ever transitioned into, I have always taken the help of tech to ease my life and better the processes around. Before joining the PGP-AIML Program, I was working as a Senior Project Manager for SAP Commerce cloud implementations.

The paucity of time has been the biggest challenge. Also, I’ve been a little rusty in coding. I have been a Java developer in my earlier years and have never been out of touch with technology actively, but it has been many years since I had done any coding myself.

Having started the course at the peak of COVID-19 did not leave much of choice. Even if this had not been the case, I believe my work schedules would have permitted me only for a self-learning course like GreatLeaning offered. Mentoring sessions and a paced course were a cherry on top.

The mentoring sessions help us understand the need and the fitment of the course materials we study. Sometimes the course is more theoretical to help us appraise the subject better, and the mentor helps us connect the dots as to how the history of the evolution of the subject is important to even our evolution of the understanding of the subject. My mentor has been excellent in conducting his classes with impetus on more interactive sessions with a lot of focus on real-life problems and hands-on sessions. He has been a great support. He has helped us understand the topics in-depth with a lot of hands-on subjects. I have not been delayed in my course, and a lot of that is attributed to my mentor. A lot of pointers are also given to reading materials that help us understand the current trends and the implementation processes.

I am yet to test the waters with the newly acquired skills. I hope to transition from a management role to an individual contributor role in Data Science.

I took the course since Data was going to be the next big thing in the coming decade, and I did not want to lose riding the wave. A lot of exciting work is getting done in Computer Vision, NLP, and other AI-based data decisions, and the sooner we start our experience, the better it is. There is a huge demand and shortage of good resources in this domain, plus a lot of scope for exciting new work.
