Growing up in a family that valued education, Pavithra P was encouraged to pursue her genuine interests. As data became an increasingly important part of her day-to-day role, she felt motivated to deepen her knowledge. This led her to enroll in the Master of Data Science (Global) program at Deakin University while continuing her professional journey.
A Gradual Shift Towards Data Science
Born and raised in Chennai and currently living in Bangalore, Pavitra began her career in the IT sector.“I completed my B.Sc. in Computer Science and MCA while working at TCS, and although I was initially interested in becoming a developer, after joining TCS, I was inspired to become a data scientist,”she says.
During her 4.8-year tenure at TCS, Pavitra worked in the retail domain, where analyzing data became a regular part of her role. Over time, she found herself enjoying these tasks more than anything else. That growing interest helped her realize where she truly wanted to focus her career. “After I joined TCS, I was inspired to become a data scientist,” she says.
Coming from a family that deeply values education, Pavitra was encouraged to pursue her genuine interests. Her mother, a software engineer, and her younger brother, who is pursuing his master’s degree, provided a supportive environment that helped shape her confidence.
“I come from a family with a strong educational background. My mother is a software engineer, and my younger brother is pursuing his master’s degree.”
Balancing Work, Learning, and Growth
Managing the job and the program was challenging for Pavithra at times, especially after she joined her new company, Carelon Global Solutions, but it was all the more reason to upskill.
“Handling both the work and the course alongside was quite difficult for me—that too, after joining the new company, I needed to upskill myself both professionally and in the new technology.”
Despite this, she continued with the program and focused on applying what she learned wherever possible. One of the highlights of the program for Pavitra was learning Data Visualization. She enjoyed understanding data more precisely and presenting insights in a clearer, more professional way. Tools like Tableau and Data Visualization techniques soon became part of her work, helping her apply classroom learning directly to real projects. Beyond technical skills, the program helped her become more organised. “Throughout the course, I learned how to handle tough situations and how to manage deadlines,” she adds.
Moving Forward With Clarity and Confidence
Today, Pavitra feels better prepared to take the next step in her Data Science journey. The program helped Pavitra gain confidence in her skills and direction. “I want to become a perfect Data Scientist and be able to crack the interviews with this knowledge.” With steady learning and consistent effort, she continues to work towards that goal.
