Seventeen years into working in the telecommunications domain, learning had remained part of Jayant Kaushal’s professional life. As data and analytics became more closely tied to how decisions were made, he chose to spend time understanding this shift more deeply, alongside his ongoing work responsibilities.
Early Career and Professional Experience
Jayant completed his Bachelor of Technology in Information Technology in 2007 and entered the workforce during a period when the job market was impacted by a recession. Despite limited opportunities, he began his career in telecommunications, gaining experience that would shape his professional path over the years. His work later took him across India and other countries, eventually leading him to South Africa, where he has been based for the past decade. Living and working in different regions exposed him to varied work cultures and environments, contributing to both professional and personal growth.
“These experiences not only helped me grow professionally but also allowed me to develop personally by immersing myself in different cultures, work environments, and challenges,” he shares.
Choosing to Upskill as Technology Changed
As technology advanced, Jayant became more aware of how Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning were influencing data-driven decision-making. This growing focus prompted him to strengthen his understanding of data science, patterns, and algorithms. “The primary catalyst for me to upskill in this domain was the rapid evolution of technology, particularly the increasing emphasis on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning,” he explains. “I realized the importance of understanding data science, patterns, and algorithms to stay relevant and contribute effectively.”
With this in mind, he enrolled in the Post Graduate Program in Data Science with Generative AI (formerly known as Data Science and Business Analytics) by the McCombs School of Business, University of Texas. Reflecting on the decision, he says, “The idea was to upskill myself more and get a deeper understanding of Data Science, to which I feel this was the best-suited course for me.” Support from his parents, wife, family, and friends helped him take on structured learning alongside his professional commitments.
Learning While Working Full Time
Balancing a full-time role with a progressive academic program came with its challenges. “One of the main challenges was adapting to the progressive nature of the course, as I am a full-time working professional,” Jayant notes. To manage both, he dedicated additional time to self-study and sought guidance from mentors, friends, and online communities.
Certain topics stood out during the program, particularly Time Series Forecasting, which he found relatable to his current role. Over time, he strengthened his technical skills in Data Analysis, Statistical Modeling, Python, and Machine Learning frameworks.
“On the intangible side, I have enhanced my problem-solving skills, adaptability, and critical thinking. I have also developed strong communication skills, which helped me effectively present technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders,” he adds.
During this period, Jayant also connected with a mentor who was an experienced data scientist, gaininWhy Continuous Learning Matters: Jayant Kaushal on Upskilling After 17 Years in Telecomg guidance on complex concepts and exposure to industry perspectives.
Continuing to Learn, One Step at a Time
Completing the program influenced how Jayant approached learning and new technologies. “During my learning journey, I discovered a newfound confidence in my ability to adapt and learn new technologies quickly,” he says.
Reflecting on the outcome, he shares, “My new skill set has significantly expanded my career opportunities,” noting that it has opened doors to explore data-driven roles across industries and international markets.
For Jayant, learning remains ongoing. “Honestly, I believe that my learning journey is still ongoing, and I am continually discovering new concepts and skills.” His experience reflects a grounded approach to professional growth, shaped by his work, learning, and the understanding that knowledge is continually evolving.
