Learned how to convert unstructured data into useful business insights – Shubhank Katarey, PGP DSBA

Table of contents

Starting with my personal background, I come from this beautiful city of lakes, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. I have done my Bachelors of Engineering from Technocrats Institute of Technology & Science in Electronics and Communications. I started my career in IT in 2016 with Capgemini as Software Tester/Quality Analyst.

Before joining this program, I was working in Capgemini as Software Tester or Quality Analyst (Manual and Database testing). I worked there for 4.5 years and my day-to-day tasks involved manual testing, database testing, functional testing, regression testing, test case writing, and reporting & updating the same in Jira for one of the clients, Ikea.

In my previous job role, during the initial days of my work, I was so amazed to see how the flow of data from one system to another plays such a big and important role in managing the company’s growth and has the potential to transform it into a more organized way to get useful insights from it for the organization’s benefits, and this got me more curious about the role that any data plays in our day to day life. As I moved further, I got more interest in the work related to managing that data/information in RDBMS and other DBMS systems. I got the opportunity to work with SQL and the DBMS Oracle 12c.

I chose this course/program from Great Learning because when I was comparing this course curriculum, duration, price, and timings with other available courses, I found that the course covers all the important topics and the duration is also not long and not too short, it’s structured in such a way that anyone can pursue this course while working without taking any gap.

I did not have any strong technical knowledge about programming languages and how the software industry works. During my initial days of work in my previous job role, I was doing manual testing, and I did not feel I was doing something worthwhile. I also wasn’t sure about the future of manual testing, as every organization is looking to automate routine tasks which are time-consuming and less efficient. Then I thought of upgrading myself with some more technical skills, and due to the urge to learn more about the importance of data, I started searching for some courses/programs related to data analysis. I was looking for a transition into the field of data science and then I got to know about this course from Great Learning.

Since this course is in collaboration with McCombs School of Business and Great Lakes Institute of Management, the faculty, and mentors from both the institutes have done so well in making this course curriculum easy, worthy and beginner-friendly for each and every kind of student. The modules were arranged in such a sequence that students from any field are able to understand them easily and can utilize it in their next project. The mentor sessions on weekends were very well organized and each and every topic was thoroughly taught with end-to-end hands-on projects. The recording of these sessions was also provided for future use. For practice and self-assessment, the practice sets and quizzes were given to us after the module completion. Study materials and self-paced video lectures related to each topic are available for a better understanding of the same. The program managers were also very supportive throughout the course. I have learned a lot from this course, and it makes me think about how organizations can convert their unstructured data, missing information and results from their past performances into useful business insights.

The mentor’s understanding and knowledge of the data science subjects is outstanding. He helped the students in clearing all their doubts in an easy manner. He has always responded on time whenever we needed some help regarding any confusion or doubts in the modules during weekend sessions as well as on weekdays also.

I have learned a lot from this course in depth about data science and analytics, but I am still learning and seeking the opportunity in some organization to implement my skills.

My advice to people who are looking forward to learning analytics and/or making such transitions possible:

Working professionals, who are looking to transition into the field of data science and analytics, can take this course from Great Learning to get in-depth knowledge about analytics, as this course will give you a better understanding of the use of data analysis in various domains.
