The mentoring session provides a whole new perspective – Aishwarya, PGP AIML

I have completed my Bachelors in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. Currently working as an IT Support Analyst in Intel. I have worked on .Net and Salesforce projects in the Sales and Marketing Domain. I was and still have been working on a salesforce application and learning development in Salesforce. Since I joined IT after graduating as a EEE engineer, it was hard to understand the IT process and software development with very little training in programming.

I chose PGP AIML Great Learning as a colleague had shared a very good experience with the curriculum and application-based teaching provided by the faculty. I was a bit hesitant about the online medium as the friend who referred me to this course had taken face-to-face classes that took place monthly. Before enrolling in the course, this concern was addressed by the Great Learning team by letting me know that online classes would be held weekly and faculty would support whenever it’s needed for the students enrolled in the course.

Since the video content released every week focuses more on the theoretical, the mentoring session provides a whole new perspective on the topics that are learned through recorded weekly content. The mindset given by the mentor to think like a data scientist and analyze data has added high value to the skills being learned from the course. Mentored learning sessions are helping a lot, especially because of the data sets we get to analyze and the industry processes we are taught to solve problems. From the first session, the mentor has been trying to give us the mindset to think and look at data like a data scientist. It’s not just the technical skills but other skills like how to approach a problem that cannot be learned through any recorded content. Teaching is not limited to the given curriculum. Mentor provides useful resources to learn about the new tools that are being used industry-wide.

Even though there’s still a long way to go, and I am just halfway through the course, the most important skill set learned from the course is the data analysis and problem-solving approach. Everything that has been taught in the course has only helped me realize how important data is for growth in any domain. It has also equipped me to gather data and understand data in my workplace for different purposes.

The advice I would like to give to the people who are just starting with learning analytics would be – The importance given to the technical skills should also be given to the problem-solving skills. I had second thoughts before joining the course, thinking coding would be different as I had very little experience with coding, but only after completing a few modules of the course was it evident that coding is just a small part of the learning. After completing a few projects, I have understood that problem solving, and data analysis are the main aspects of the program rather than coding, which makes this course open for Non-IT background people as well.
