career in machine learning

What is Machine Learning?

Machine Learning is a subset of Artificial Intelligence. The whole idea here is to make machines more human-like in their behaviour and decision making. As the name implies, it refers to giving the machine an ability to learn and develop their own programs. This task is done with the least amount of human intervention, which means enabling the machine to learn from data rather than through programming it explicitly.

But as you can imagine, it is not a simple process, especially when compared with the traditional form of programming. In traditional programming, data is given as input and a well written and tested program is fed into a machine to generate output. When it comes to machine learning, input data along with the output is fed to the machine during its learning phase, and it then develops a program for itself.

Now, you are already introduced to this concept of machine learning, you might be aware of the need to learn it. However, if not, we’ll break it down for you.

Learning machine learning is necessary as it can automate many tasks, mainly those that only human beings are capable of performing with their intelligence. With the help of machine learning, many routine tasks at businesses can be automated. It also helps in creating models that are able to process and analyse large amounts of complex data sets to deliver accurate results. Thus, in this manner, businesses can leverage the power of machine learning and reach optimal decisions.

Machine Learning Demand in Singapore

Singapore is the buzzing tech hub of Asia. With its strategic location, strong Research & Development funding, presence of all types of tech companies: from startups to tech giants, and a rich pool of young, highly educated tech talent and advanced techies, Singapore is a highly sought-after base for the latest technology. It is home to 59% of the Asian regional headquarters of MNCs, as per the city’s Economic Development Board.

Given the rapid pace of developments in technology in the last decade, there is an increasing demand for automation. Based on the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs 2020 report, Machine Learning was adopted 93% in Singapore. This means that one of the most high demand, popular, and coveted jobs in Singapore is in the field of machine learning. Using mathematical models, machine learning experts create systems that learn automatically and improve upon this ability based on the data collected.

Due to high demand, there are many machine learning engineer jobs in Singapore. The job of a Machine Learning Specialist also ranks in the top 3 emerging roles in the country. Typically, employers require machine learning engineers to have a strong background in Python along with proficiency in at least one area of machine learning. This includes Natural Language Processing, Neural Networks, or Robotics.

Let us now understand some of the top career paths for machine learning, the skills required for the same, and their salaries in Singapore.
