Types of Interview questions can be classified based on personal and technical as well as profile based interviews. The types of interview questions depend on the profile of the candidate if the candidate is lateral and possesses some experience in the specific technology/role/domain. 

If the candidate is a fresh graduate then it will be mainly focused on their learning and knowledge acquired during their specialization apart from the logical reasoning and psychology/behavioral related questions in order to assess the candidate in different dimensions. 

In general the types of interview questions can be asked about their personal, logical reasoning and behavioral and technical aspects in order to test/assess the candidate with respect to different dimensions or holistic approach.

Frequent Questions Asked in an Interview

1. Please tell me about yourself?

Candidate should explain briefly about his/her personal details within a short period. The candidate can brief about their name and the place of their residence apart from their qualifications etc.

2. Why should I hire/recruit you?

The interviewer is expecting an answer from the candidate such as how he/she is suitable or fit for the specific role/job. The candidate should explain how he can develop the competency in order fulfill the job requirements.

3. What is your career objective?

Career objectives are mainly divided into short term and long term objectives.

They should explain what he/she wants to achieve within the next 2 to 3 years for a short term career goal and long term is concerned with achieving the career objective in the long run.

For example, a short term objective refers to completing their course and getting placement in their dream company. Long term objective refers to reaching some top position in the long run.

4. You are studying Mechanical Engineering. So, how you are suitable/useful to the organization 

Mechanical Engineering is one of the core branches for understanding with different specializations available such as basics of product and machine design, production process methods, thermal engineering and analysis and Industrial Engineering and Management related courses. 

Hence, it provides multiple career options. The main aim of any course is to understand the basics. Hence, logical reasoning and interpretation is the need of the hour and highly essential for any organizations in order to work in any environment.

5. If you get an opportunity for Higher education then do you continue or leave the job?

I will definitely choose the job option as it is my priority and try to convince my management or higher authorities to provide sabbatical or long leave in order to pursue higher education based on the requirement during that time.

6. What are your strengths and weaknesses?

Please explain about your core strengths and how it will be useful to the organization and how to overcome or minimize the weaknesses.

7. What is your dream job?

Please explain about the job and role which you are applying for and why it is your dream job.

8. What are your hobbies?

Candidates should explain their personal hobbies such as listening to music, dance and playing cricket etc. 

9. Why is there a decreasing trend in academic scores in your career?

Interview panel may ask this question in order to test the candidate’s academic consistency or progress. Please explain the reasons behind the decreasing pattern and try to convince the interviewer or panel members.

10. Why is there a break or gap in your education and professional experience?

HR Managers and Interview panel members will ask these general questions to assess the candidate in order to test their consistency.

11. How did you achieve your short term and long term career goals?

Please mention your timelines and roadmap./plan to activate the objectives by considering the various constraints.

12. What is your favorite/interesting subject?

These types of questions generally asked for recent graduates or fresher interviews. It is always better to choose the subject which they can answer confidently.

13. Why are you shifting from the core job to service/information technology sector?

The candidate should explain the proper reason why he/she is looking for change in order to convince the interviewer. These types of questions generally asked to the experienced candidates those who are looking for career change from one sector to other sector. Hence, they can answer how their present and past experience will be useful for that specific role.

14. Did you participate in any extracurricular/co curricular activities?

These types of questions generally asked during fresher interviews.

15. What are your key achievements in your past educational/professional aspects?

Please highlight your achievements/accomplishments that you have successfully completed or mentored.

16. Why do you want to leave your present job?

Please give the appropriate reason for changing the job such as “better career prospects” and also mention the positive points and strengths of the organization which they are looking for change. How it will be useful for mutual benefit for the employee and employer in this regard.

17. How do you rate yourself on 1 to 5 scales?

Please mention your expertise level in the required/specific skill set.

              For example, 1- Poor and 5- Excellent

18. How do you see yourself in the next 2 to 5 years?

Please explain to the panel members what is the position/role you are expecting in the next 2 to 5 years timeline and what is your plan and how do you achieve the position within the timelines.

19. Explain your present academic project

These types of questions generally asked for fresher/recent graduate interviews.

 Please explain about your academic project such as topic and methodology etc.

20. Explain about your internship?

Please explain the internship which you have done as part of your course and how it will be useful and connected to your job role.

21. What are the top three factors which you have contributed for the growth of the organization?

Please mention what are the factors that you have contributed for the growth such as successfully mentoring the team members and motivating the project team to complete the work within timelines and providing guidance to juniors. Please mention your coordination with management as well as the other teams for completing the work.

Please talk about the communication, coordination and creativity aspects.

22. Did you participate in any volunteer services?

Please explain your contribution to volunteer services i.e. involving CSR activities for the benefit of under privileged groups.

23. How did you provide any guidance to the team members who were struggling to complete the task?

Please explain how you have given guidance in order to complete the task. 

For example, provide the guidance to the team members after understanding the root cause for the problem.

24. How did you convince your management when you missed the timeline/deadline?

Please try to explain to your management about the project that you missed the timeline.

Please explain the main cause for not meeting the specified deadline and convince them how you have handled or solved the problem.
