Planet of The AIs? Will AI Take Charge? Thoughts by Elon Musk & Stephen Hawking

Will AI take over conventional machines and eventually humans as well?

‘AI is likely the best or the worst thing to happen to humanity’ – Stephen Hawking

Let us dig in deeper!

Introduction :

AI is a branch of computer science which gives a machine the ability to learn in order to make it smarter and work and behave like humans.

To err is human, to not is AI! The average error probability of a human is around 3% and most organisations today cannot afford this for many processes. Thus, AI is the alternative to reduce this percentage to close to zero. Teaching an AI is similar to teaching a small kid to learn numbers. We feed the information once and then make it take multiple tests, award for correct answers and penalize for incorrect ones. Having said that, what are the applications of AI?

‘If someone has a fantastic biology background, he or she can contribute in AI and healthcare’  – Fei-Fei Li

The reach of AI is not just limited to computer science and analytics. Sophisticated systems in the field of healthcare and diagnosis like Google’s AI and AR enabled microscope, IBM watson, Microsoft and startup’s like Ayasdi highlight the extent to which AI is influencing healthcare.

In the sports industry, AI seeks to bring an edge to the level of competition. Researchers have come up with an AI to predict the winning probability in the 2018 Fifa World Cup. Giants like ESPN, NASCAR and NBA have all been investing to upgrade their systems with AI to change the game for their industries.

AI is beginning to find its niche in the manufacturing industry as well. The Ferrari Simulation center is an AI enabled simulation lab which is used predominantly for enhancing the performance of F1 cars.

Intelligent arms have consistently been in focus when it comes to AI and have made their way into military arsenal in many parts of the world.AI-guided missiles that can decide to switch targets mid-flight, AI operation systems that provide the means for UAV clusters, machine guns with a camera embedded with an AI which can confirm its target without human intervention are among the emerging technologies to name a few.

“Without flexible algorithms, computers can only do what we tell them,” says Michael Mendelson, who is a curriculum developer at NVIDIA. Sensors, drones(read- drone to detect violent individuals in crowd), cameras are all being equipped with AI to enhance surveillance and security systems across the globe.

‘The automation in factories has already decimated jobs in traditional manufacturing, and the increase of artificial intelligence is likely to extend this job destruction deep into the middle classes, with only the most caring, creative or supervisory roles remaining’ – Stephen Hawking.

Even though the results are impressive, the fact that AI enabled systems are increasingly overtaking humans cannot be overlooked. According to a report by TheVerge around 800 million jobs would be under threat by 2030 due to the amplifying rate of automation.

‘We need to be super careful with AI. Potentially it is more dangerous than nukes’– Elon Musk

Many thinkers and experts consider AI to be an increasing threat to human existence. It is true that every coin has two sides. The productivity of AI is unquestionable but so is the potential threat ‘we’ might face.

So Let’s Summarize :

The advantages of AI are absolute. As efficient and interesting AI is, the possibility that it might turn humans obsolete in undeniable. So whether to use AI universally for efficiency over humans or to figure a balance between man and machine is a thought we all need to ponder on!
