PyCharm - Installation and Configuration

The procedure for installing PyCharm is as easy and similar to that of other software.  Follow the following steps to install PyCharm on your system from scratch:

Step 1: Go to the JetBrains website first or click here to get the IDE. This is the display that will appear.

Based on your operating system, there are several alternatives. When you open the website, your operating system is identified, and the default selection is appropriate; for instance, the default option on PCs with Windows OS will be Windows. Furthermore, there are two Download options available pertaining to two kinds of licenses. One is for business purposes used by professionals that can be bought at a given price once the trial period of 30 days gets over. The other one gives a community license for basic use free of cost and can be used right after installing it. The only difference between the two editions is that the former includes some exclusive and advanced Python features absent in the latter.

Step 2: Click on the ‘Download’ button after selecting your OS type to start the downloading of PyCharm. After a few patient minutes, you will have PyCharm downloaded to your system.

Step 3: Open your file explorer in the folder where the file was downloaded after the download is complete in order to start the installation process.

Step 4: Run pycharm-community-2022.3.1.exe/ pycharm-professional-2022.3.1 and then follow the wizard's instructions. The instructions window will look like the following:

Step 5: Now, you just have to act according to the Wizard’s instructions and keep on clicking on the ‘next’ button for each configuration setting. The path given in the Destination is where your PyCharm will get installed by default. You can ‘Browse’ and choose a different destination folder as well. Once your installation is almost done, you will get the ‘Finish’ button and reboot options. As soon as you reboot your system, you can use PyCharm.

While configuring your PyCharm installation, you must keep these points in mind.

  • The role of the 64-bit launcher is to produce a desktop launch icon.
  • The command, Open Folder as Project, adds a menu item to the folder context menu that enables PyCharm projects to be opened from the selected directory.
  • The extension of executable Python files is ‘.py’. It basically creates a relationship with Python files so that PyCharm may open them.
  • Add dir launchers to the PATH option to add the launchers directory to the environment variable to enable executing PyCharm instances from the console without providing a path.

The above window is followed by the following window which lets you choose the folder for creating a shortcut of PyCharm.

Step 6: Click on the ‘Install’ button to start the installation. The following window will open up.

You may like to click on ‘Show details’ button in case you want to know about the details of installation in terms of what all packages and modules are being installed.

Step 7: Once the installation is complete, the installer will ask you to either ‘Reboot now’ or ‘Reboot manually later’. You can choose as per your will.  Once, you system gets rebooted, you will have PyCharm installed on your system.

Click on ‘Finish’ and Congrats! Your PyCharm has been installed as per your desired settings or default settings.
